Anyone know how to date Nikon camera bodies by serial number?
They began with some employees and eight German technicians who were invited in July of and arrived in January of They were actually an optical firm and not a camera manufacturer, therefore, their beginnings parallel those of Leitz and Zeiss, who also began as optical manufacturers. They began to produce a vast array of optical products such as microscopes, telescopes, transits, surveying equipment and optical measuring devices for industry and science. Because of the types of products they made they became well known in the scientific and industrial communities but not to the general consumer. By the ‘thirties they were producing a series of photographic lenses from 50mm to mm, mostly for plate back cameras, and the word ‘Nikkor’ was first used, having derived it from ‘Nikko’ which was used on their early microscopes. By July and August of they had completed the design of 50mm f4. Nippon Kogaku actually produced all of Canon’s lenses up to mid ; therefore all prewar and early postwar Canons came with Nikkor lenses.

The F3’s sophisticated TTL flash metering measures the exposure off the film plane during the moment of exposure. To take advantage of this, one needed a flash designed for the F3’s flash mount. All these flash units supported full TTL operation with the F3. Among the conventional units, the SB was small and light, and the SB A was powerful and versatile.
Third-party makers like Sunpack also offered units for the F3. Near the end of its production run, Nikon engineers did what they should have done in They introduced a TTL hot-shoe adapter for the F3. There is a work-around for doing good fill-flash work on the F3. At this point it is o. Once the exposure is set, adjust the Film Speed Compensation dial on the camera or on the AS to the desired amount of compensation.
Switch on the flash, and shoot the scene. This is not as cumbersome a procedure as it seems when the light source is reasonably constant. Of course, one could still wish that Nikon had given us an F3a to match the flash capabilities of the exciting new FM3a!

Other sources of information include web-pages and anonymous information passed down to me through others. There is a real absence of information on large format lenses. Of the contemporary makers, only Schneider has made a great effort to provide information, the other lens makers have been less forthcoming. However Rodenstock serial numbers, the other major European manufacturer, have been posted by Kerry Thalman.
There are a few web-pages, both official and unofficial, for other three manufacturers, Congo , Nikon, Unofficial and Official and Fuji , also here. However, serial numbers are, to my knowledge, entirely lacking. Zeiss no longer makes large format lenses, and consequently has little interest or incentive to provide this information. In any case, none of these companies provides any sort of information regarding the lenses they once made.
This page is a modest attempt to provide one form of information, serial number-year correspondences.

Lateral chromatic aberration is easy to correct in post processing, and Nikon automatically corrects for it in its internal camera processing. This lens has minimal lateral CA. Longitudinal chromatic aberration cannot easily be corrected in post processing. Light fall off, or vignetting, is not a huge concern with this lens. The corners are a bit dark

Photography website The Digital Picture has listed a handy way to work out the age of your lens based on the serial number.
Older Canon lenses were easier to date because they had a specific code, whereas newer lenses and bodies post shifted towards serial numbers instead. First, find the digit serial number and divide it into the following pattern: Simply consult the table below to find out when it was made. The other letters indicate batch number, as well as the actual serial number of the lens in question. Screenshot by CBSi If you have a slightly older lens, or one that has not yet succumbed to the serial number phenomenon, you can also work out how old it is by looking at the marking on the black plastic by the lens mount.
Generally featuring a six digit combination of letters and numbers, the first letter indicates what factory it is made in U for Utsunomiya, Japan; F for Fukushima, Japan; O for Oita, Japan , while the next one is the year of manufacture. This lens was built in the Utsunomiya, Japan, factory in May

Lens prefix serial number for US? I thought that all lens market in US will have a serial number prefix with US as my others Nikkor lens are. I believe that this marking is inconsistent across older and newer lenses. Lack of consideration for others in minor matters. A loss of politeness, of gentle manners is more significant than a riot.

It used to be that they grappled primarily with the electronics powerhouse Sony on the consumer side, but that’s changed to the massive electronics manufacturer, Panasonic, a company whose digital cameras are in such high demand that people are paying full price and more for cameras like the LX3, TS1, and ZS3, even a year after their introduction. But that’s good news for us, the consumer, because Canon’s also a massive company capable of turning on a dime to introduce an array of cameras to answer any challenge, giving us more choices.
The PowerShot G11 should by no means detract from the Canon PowerShot S90, a camera whose features read like a laundry list of demands from technology editors like myself, cleanly wrapped into a small, pocketable format. The S designation marks the return of the semi-pro moniker, last used by the S5 IS, but more importantly by the S40 through S80, very popular cameras among enthusiasts in their day.
More remarkable than that, though, is that Canon, the digital camera marketplace leader, is the first to take a step back in the megapixel race with both the G11 and Canon S Last year’s G10 had a megapixel sensor, and most of Canon’s pocket cameras have megapixels.

The Founders And The Zeiss Company Foundations: From its inception through to the middle 19th century, lens making was a craft that was essentially passed on from generation to generation.
I prefer solidly made binoculars, and have amassed a modest little collection of prized specimens, mostly acquired off eBayUK, but also charity shops and car boot fairs. I used to own a pair of 11×80’s bought off Leo Henzl Jnr in , but I sold them 10 years later. They were too heavy to hold for more than a couple of minutes, and on a photographic tripod, too awkward to point near the zenith. You really need a parallelogram mount for binoculars that size and larger. I prefer a binocular you can carry with you to a star party, for casual star gazing.
But I like good clean optics, and many modern binoculars are woefully deficient in optical quality, unless you shell out a grand or more for a top notch pair.
